Dumping syndrome

What is Dumping syndrome?

Dumping Syndrome is a symptom that occurs to the patient as a result of the rapid emptying of stomach contents to the small intestine, especially sugary one. The contents of the stomach and digestive juice swell very quickly to the intestines without digestion, causing many digestive-related symptoms.

What are its reasons?

This syndrome often occurs after bariatric surgery if the patient does not comply with postoperative instructions, diet and doctor's advice. More food intake in large quantities than the satiety level after the operation leads to the onset of this syndrome.

How does normal digestion occur?

Normal digestion is carried out by moving food and digestive juices into the intestines in a structured manner in quantity and mechanism. Food is then subjected to a range of digestive processes under the influence of certain digestive enzymes and hormones.
Any change in this mechanism causes Dumping syndrome.

Symptoms of Dumping syndrome:

Heart palpitations, rapid heart beat, sweating, hypotension, diarrhea after eating, vomiting and nausea, severe tiredness and dizziness, low blood sugar, abdominal pain, tension and anxiety.
- Diarrhea occurs as a result of the rapid emptying of stomach contents leading to rapid water entry.
- Rapid dumping of stomach contents causes excessive amounts of insulin to be released, causing hypoglycemia.

Treatment:

- In most cases, self-treatment occurs without any medications. Only by modifying the diet and adapting the stomach to surgery. The patient's adherence to postoperative instructions is also an essential component of treatment.
- Some cases require taking medications that slow the emptying of food into the intestines.
- In advanced cases, you may need surgical intervention.

6 Tips for Preventing Dumping Syndrome:

1- Eat small and multiple meals.
2- Do not drink while eating at the same time.
3- Reducing the percentage of sugars in eating.
4- Avoid lying down immediately after eating.
5- Eat foods that contain fibers.
6- Chew well before swallowing.

What are the types of Dumping syndrome?

This syndrome is divided into two types:
- Early symptoms: which appear immediately after eating such as vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.
- Late symptoms: which appear after 1-3 hours after eating as a result of the release of huge amounts of insulin that causes many of the symptoms we talked about earlier.
You may have one or both types of syndrome. Also, After years of bariatric surgery, you may develop it.
